Carl's Story

One of my patients has multiple comorbidities: diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. He was initially hard to engage, unwilling to open up, and did not comply with his medications as prescribed. He also had a poor diet and was not concerned with tracking his (high) blood glucose levels. I built rapport with him through positive reinforcement during our monthly calls to establish trust. We decided to tackle one issue at a time to build his confidence.

HbA1c dropped

from 11.9 to 6.0 in 6 months

We first focused on Type 2 diabetes. When we started, his HbA1c was 11.9. I discussed how maintaining a healthy diet, combined with medication compliance could help lower his blood glucose levels.

Within six months, he lowered his A1c to 6.0 – nearly cutting it in half. This is huge progress, and his attitude has completely shifted. After seeing such drastic, measurable improvements, he feels empowered to focus on losing weight and has set a goal to reduce his body weight by 10-15% through aerobics.
